I just cannot express how much I LOVE today’s real wedding feature. Dewi and Cameron are here to share their Brighton Town Hall wedding ceremony and pub wedding reception. I think it’s just ace that they used local suppliers and their laid-back fun attitude really shines through.

They chose to tie the knot on the 2nd September 2019 in the seaside town of Brighton as it’s where they first met. Isn’t that just so lovely?! I think it’s always such a wonderful way to choose a wedding venue, a location with meaning. There were swoon-worthy florals, low key decorations and delicious cakes. I must also rave about Dewi and Cameron’s attire, they both looked super stylish.

Bloom Weddings captured their day so beautifully, from the first look to the first dance and I cannot thank them enough for sharing these images with us.

Brighton Town Hall Wedding

The Proposal

We got engaged in May 2018. Cam proposed at a picnic at birling gap- the site where my grandparents had actually met back in the day at an old army air base. He had chosen a vintage 1960s ring and the whole thing was just perfect!

The Vision

We were back and forth for a long time about having a bigger more traditional wedding or a smaller town hall affair. Once we had decided we desperately wanted a really low-key but fun day it was like a massive weight off our shoulders! Brighton is the perfect seaside town for such merriment, and we envisioned a bright fun day with lots of dancing and drinks flowing.

The Planning Process

I didn’t find the planning process too stressful once we had decided we just wanted a really fun and laid back day. The best part was finding all the suppliers and seeing it all come to life! I used Pinterest and Instagram for a lot of inspiration and to source our suppliers. The most important thing for us was for it to be a fun day, minimal stress and a great party! Finding brilliant suppliers really helped this along as you knew that every aspect was taken care of.

Your Outfits & Accessories

My dress was from Brighton independent Hope and Harlequin. I was lucky enough to stumble over a sample sale of theirs so my dream dress was also a total bargain! The moment I put it on I loved the elegant, simple silhouette and the luxurious heavy silk. The most important thing was that it was so me – I had tried lots of more “traditional” bridal gowns on which were beautiful but just not my cup of tea. This dress was exactly what I could see myself getting married in. Some in house alterations to get that perfect fit and I was ready to go.

My headpiece I purchased from Sophie Joy Design via Etsy. I knew I definitely wanted a statement piece while still being delicate and pretty.

My veil was bespoke from Sash & Veil. The most delicate thing I have ever worn with real flower petals scattered across the tulle. It definitely looked effective blowing in the Brighton seaside wind!

My shoes were Russel & Bromley – I wanted something comfortable with a low heel but that bit of sparkle!

Cam’s suit was bespoke from Gresham and Blake in Scottish tartan as a nod to his Scottish heritage. We loved that he went for quite an outgoing print – after all why can’t the groom have a little fun and he got lots of compliments on the bold choice. He wore navy suede shoes from Loake and his late grandfathers cufflinks.

Beauty

The wonderful Poppy Tallulah did my hair and makeup as well as the bridesmaids hair. Another supplier I found on Instagram, Brighton based and I just loved her soft glowy bridal looks. I went for a hair and make up trial a few months before and just knew I had made the right choice. I wanted my makeup to look minimal but effective, focusing mainly on the skin and that natural dewy look. I liked the idea of having my hair up but still soft around my face so we went for a messy intricate braid with tendrils to frame the face, headpiece and veil slotting in perfectly to bring it all together. The bridesmaids had a braided up-do which contrasted nicely. The best part was having Poppy there in the morning. I think she really set everyone’s nerves at ease and was such a calming presence when we were all getting ready. I felt so relaxed just chatting while she worked away that when it was time to go I remembered oh my god I’m off to get married now! I know she made us all feel absolutely beautiful.

The Venue

Our ceremony was held at the regency room in Brighton Town Hall. We loved the laid back vibe of a town hall wedding and the sentiment of getting married in the city where we first met.

Our wedding breakfast and reception was held at The Walrus Pub in Brighton, who catered a fully Indonesian menu in honour of my heritage which was absolutely delicious! They also provided our “cheese board” for the evening reception – the biggest grandest display of cheese and nibbles I have ever seen.

The Readings & Music

My mum (MOB) read Maya Angelou “Touched by an Angel” at our ceremony.

Our first dance “Grow old with me” by Tom Odell.

Groomsmen

We weren’t too fussed about the bridal party being too matchy-matchy so the groomsmen wore their own navy suits and we simply purchased ties that complimented the bridesmaid dresses as well as the boutonnieres from dove & myrtle which tied the whole look together.

Bridesmaids

We chose multiway bridesmaid dresses from TFNC London (sourced through ASOS) as I liked the idea that the girls could be in the same colour but style the dress however they wanted to suit them.

I also purchased Katie Loxton bridesmaid clutches as a gift to the girls on the day.

Your Photographer

We knew we wanted natural, candid and non-invasive photography of the day especially with a camera-shy groom! The moment we came across Bloom on Instagram we knew they were the ones! Chris and Anii not only captured the gorgeous images we will forever treasure but blended seamlessly into our wedding day. As we had them travelling quite a way to us, we had a video consultation some time before the wedding which was extremely helpful as we could ask any questions we had and “meet” them in a sense ahead of the day. On the day of the wedding they were a calm and organised presence (read: extremely helpful in directing wandering family members from place to place as well as in and out of photos!). Our family and friends still talk about how fabulous they were and such a welcome addition to our wedding party. We were so overwhelmed when we received our photos and highlights reel, reliving the moments we had not even noticed them documenting!

Your Filmmaker

As well as our photography, we chose Bloom’s package that included a video highlights reel of the day. We really wanted the essence of the day captured on film without necessarily having a full length video of the whole event so this served us perfectly. The video was beautifully filmed and put together and really easy to share with family and friends. I’m glad we chose the highlights reel as I for one am guilty of watching it on an extremely frequent basis still and love that I can remind myself of that day whenever I want.

The Details & Décor

Me and my mum spent a lot of time on Pinterest in the lead up to the wedding as we had decided to do a bit of DIY decor. We worked around a gold and green colour scheme which complimented the dining room in the Walrus nicely. My mum sourced greenery from an online florist and put together all the flowers for the lunch tables with tall cylindrical vases and floating tea lights. I purchased acrylic signs from Etsy for table numbers and my mum handwrite the placards and seating chart. Luckily the dining room at the walrus has unique and vintage decor, so we didn’t feel that we had to bring too much in to make it look special. The same for the underbelly room where we had our reception, a few fairy lights and vases on tables dotted around lifted the existing unique decor of the room.

The Flowers

My bridal bouquet was crafted by the lovely Jane at Dove & Myrtle. I had stumbled across her Instagram page and adored her natural arrangements, a far cry from the rigid bouquets I had imagined in wedding planning. When I met Jane to discuss what I wanted I more or less gave her our vague colour scheme and said I wanted the most wild “out there” bouquet and she certainly delivered on that brief. The first time I got emotional on the wedding day was when Jane arrived at our hotel room with my beautiful arrangement – beyond my wildest dreams. She also made the groomsmen boutonnières to match.

My mum made the floral hoops carried by the bridesmaids with artificial flowers and greenery from Country Baskets due to a bridesmaid with flower-related allergies! In the end I think the simple hoops complimented my bouquet nicely as well as serving as a nice keepsake for my bridesmaids after the wedding.

The Cake

Our wedding cake was from Brighton local Cielo Cakery. We decided we wanted a small, understated cake for cutting but that we wanted cake jars to serve our guests as favours too. We had several different flavours which was great as there was something for everyone! I found a simple wire cake topper on Etsy for the main cake and bespoke stickers for the cake jars, commemorating the occasion.

The Honeymoon

We spent our honeymoon at White & Co La Torre Suites in Santorini which was absolutely incredible. We had always wanted to visit Santorini and our honeymoon was the perfect excuse to spend a holiday relaxing and indulging in cocktails and Greek cuisine!

Memorable Moments

My favourite moment was definitely our “first look”. We decided we definitely wanted to do a “first look” and walk into the ceremony together as we would be for the rest of our lives. It was a really lovely moment to share just the two of us and definitely helped with the nerves that had been building up all morning! We both felt so much more relaxed once we had seen each other and walked into the ceremony room ready to begin this new chapter of our lives.

Advice For Other Couples

My biggest piece of advice would be to remember that it is ultimately you and your partner’s day. Whether that means axing wedding traditions that aren’t your cup of tea or going all out it is completely your choice. I think it is very easy to get swept up in what you think a wedding should be like or what is expected from your wedding day by other people but ultimately the most important thing is to plan a day that you both enjoy, whatever that looks like!
