Winchester House Wedding Emily and Steve

Are you ready for the most beautiful Autumn wedding ever? Let me share with you the seriously stylish nuptials of Lauren and Liam who tied the knot at Winchester House, London on the 19th October 2019.

Their day was super relaxed, filled with fun times, and all of their nearest and dearest joined them. Their approach to wedding planning sounded perfect; to plan a big party for their best friends and family. I think having this ethos really ensures a experience fuelled day and sets you up for all the memories.

Let’s talk about their wedding styling shall we? There were gorgeous flowers and accessories in seasonal burgundy hues, then there was the show-stopping cake and the gorgeous outfits. So chic, so special.

Emily and Steve captured the laughter and the tears, plus that all important confetti moment with aplomb. I can’t thank them enough for kindly sharing these incredible captures.

The Proposal

We had been together for about 9 years before Liam proposed and I had no idea that it would take place! We went for a walk between Christmas and New Year and Liam proposed in Bushy Park in Hampton Court, near to where we live. It’s always been a special place for us and was where my Nan used to take me at weekends as a child.

We both love to travel and Liam gave me a book he had had made, with photos of all the trips we’ve been on for each letter of the alphabet. For ‘W’ he asked ‘Will you marry me?’ Apparently he’d been making it for ages!

The Vision

Very relaxed! Essentially we just wanted a big party with our best friends and close family!

The Planning Process

We spent nine months planning the wedding. I can’t say I loved wedding planning (!) – I found it very stressful at the beginning! There seemed to be a lot of decisions to make but once we had decided on the ‘big’ things such as the venue, photographers, band etc. then everything started to slot into place! So many of our friends and family helped to make things and design pieces – we couldn’t have done it without them!

Say goodbye to stress with our ultimate wedding checklist. We have you covered!

The Venue

We loved Winchester House in Putney, London as soon as we saw it. It has a beautiful gated entrance and the ballroom has windows that overlook the river. The person who was in charge of the day, Heidi, was so helpful and accommodating. I really couldn’t recommend it enough.

Your Outfits & Accessories

My dress came from The Farnham Boutique and I found it after trying on so many dresses that I almost lost hope! I had never imagined a perfect ‘dress’ but loved the lace on this dress as soon as I tried it on, particularly the leaves, which I thought would be perfect for October. Originally it was meant to be short sleeves and a V neck but the shop was amazing, changing and adapting everything to suit my tastes.

I fell in love with my shoes as soon as I saw them! They made me feel even more special and were so comfortable during the day – particularly for late night dancing!

Liam’s suit came from Moss Bros. As soon as he tried it on he knew it would be perfect. The ties were a dark red to match the reds and oranges in the flowers.

Beauty

I contacted Lizz Payne online after I saw a photograph of a wedding she had done the hair and makeup for and she was brilliant. One weekend, one of my bridesmaids and I went to Brighton, where Lizz is based, for a trial and I loved it from start to finish. She understood exactly what I wanted (a very natural relaxed look) and she was great on the day, coming early and helping us all to have a very chilled-out morning getting ready!

Groomsmen

Liam’s groomsmen were his best friends from school and, despite living in various areas in the country, all meet up regularly. Their suits were all Moss Bros.

Bridesmaids

I had two bridesmaids: my cousin, Emma, and one of my best friends, Lucy. Their dresses were from Rewritten. I didn’t really mind what colours or styles they wore; we just went into the shop and I asked them to choose some styles and colours to try on and it just so happened they both liked the same colour!

Liam’s niece, Ella, made for a beautiful flower girl! Her dress was from Monsoon. We bought her a small rabbit with her name and the date of the wedding on for her as a thank you, which she seemed to love on the day.

The Readings & Music

Liam’s sister and my brother both did readings at the wedding. We chose simple readings that made us laugh and reminded us of each other. Wendy Cope is one of my favourite poets so we chose ‘A Vow,’ followed by ‘He’s not Perfect’ by Bob Marley. In ‘He’s not Perfect’ there is a line: ‘if he can make you laugh at least once’ and Liam always knows what will make me laugh so we thought it was apt!

We chose music we loved for the ceremony.

Processional Music:

New Slang – The Shins

Music for the ceremony:

Postcards from Italy – Beirut

Everyday – Buddy Holly

High Tide or Low Tide – Bob Marley & The Wailers

Recessional Music:

You & Me Song – The Wannadies

First Dance:

I’m Yours (Jason Mraz)

In the evening, we had a band called The Hares. We had seen them play at a pub in Wimbledon and had a great time dancing! They also DJ-ed in between their sets and played exactly what we wanted – lots of 90s classics!

Why not check out our wedding music and wedding readings inspiration?

Your Photographer

Choosing Emily and Steve as our wedding photographers was one of the easiest decisions we made. They were so friendly and relaxed, and made us feel really comfortable in front of the camera – something we thought might be impossible! We were so happy when we saw our final pictures and couldn’t have wished for better photographers!

It was great having two photographers as we got ready in different locations so it was really nice to see photographs of Liam and the groomsmen as they arrived. I also loved seeing photographs of the guests as they had a drink before the ceremony in a pub nearby!

The Flowers

My Aunt very kindly arranged the flowers for the wedding, besides making the bouquets, which she said was too much pressure! She had never done anything like this before but volunteered and set about organising how many flowers were needed to fill all the bottles we bought one day at a local antiques market!

The flowers were absolutely stunning and everyone commented on them, and we cannot thank her enough for everything she did to help put it all together.

We ordered the bouquets for the bride and bridesmaids and buttonholes for the groomsmen from a local florist.

The Cake

We saw a design from ‘Alice and Rosa’ on Instagram and contacted the maker, Caro. We were so happy when she said she would be available to make our cake as her designs were so beautiful and unique.

We chose a light pink cake with one tier of raspberry and coconut and one of lemon and blueberry. It was delicious! We enjoyed some for breakfast the next day!

The Details & Décor

As soon as we started planning the wedding, we knew we wanted everything to be simple, focusing on just a few little things. I have always loved confetti (there are photographs of how excited I was throwing it from when I was a bridesmaid at my Aunt and Uncle’s wedding when I was 4!) so knew that I wanted lots of confetti at our wedding and this was one of my favourite parts of the day!

My family were also amazing at finding and making things for the day, including the table numbers with maps of places we’ve been, the photograph table plan and mini polaroid photographs of us and all the guests from when we were younger.

We also had a wonderful friend, Sam, who kindly designed our signs and menus for us. Rather than favours, we donated money to two charities in memory of our grandparents and again Sam designed small cards for everyone as a ‘thank you.’

The Honeymoon

Straight after the wedding, we decided to go to the Lake District for a few days to get away from everything and enjoy some time being newly-married!

We had wanted to visit Argentina and Brazil for many years (well before we thought we might get married one day!) and decided this would be the perfect honeymoon location. We went away over Christmas and New Year; visiting Iguazu Falls and then spending New Year’s Eve on Copacabana Beach were some of the highlights!

Memorable Moments

I’m not even sure where to begin! I loved every second of our wedding day! It was so lovely to walk into the room and just see all our friends and family looking so happy. Our ceremony was filled with a lot of laughter, from when Liam couldn’t get his ring on to when he addressed his vows to the whole congregation, prompting the registrar to ask him to repeat them, saying them instead to his wife! I remember everyone laughing and smiling and it was a part of the day I won’t forget! Emily and Steve got some great photos of all the laughing!

The speeches were also another highlight. My Dad, Liam, and the Best Man, Dean, all gave great speeches, which were a good mix of emotional and funny.

I also gave a speech to thank everyone and pay tribute to my new husband – more brides should speak on their wedding day!

Advice For Other Couples

Just enjoy yourselves! Don’t worry if things don’t go exactly to plan.

It meant so much having everyone who we loved there with us and so many people helped make the day what it was.

And laugh – a lot!
