Modern Intimate & Rustic Glasshouse Wedding
What a delight it is to be welcoming Becca and Paddy to Whimsical Wonderland Weddings today. Their stunning Anran wedding in Devon left me speechless (and that’s something which doesn’t happen often!), with it’s modern and warm atmosphere. Becca and Paddy were wed on the 26th September 2020 and they held their intimate wedding reception in the beautiful glasshouse.
You are going to adore the simple greenery styling, sustainable choices and seriously gorgeous outfits. Their day was effortlessly beautiful, with rustic wooden furniture, romantic candlelight and a lot of smiles all day long.
Micro weddings can be oh so special and this beautiful real wedding demonstrates that perfectly. Cosy and relaxed, happy and fun. Albert Palmer Photography thank you so much for sharing these joyous images with us.

The Proposal
The proposal happened whilst on holiday in Spring 2019 in Kyoto, Japan. Paddy knew he was going to pop the question at some point during the two-week holiday but didn’t know quite when. One morning he woke up to bright blue skies and decided that was the day – he googled ‘most romantic places to get engaged in Kyoto’ and off we went to a beautiful botanical garden. But it wasn’t quite that easy, after several failed attempts throughout the day – whilst we wandered through a gorgeous rose garden, walked a magnificent bamboo trail and cycled down the tranquil river path – he couldn’t quite stop Becca who was on a mission to fit in as much site seeing into the day as possible.
Finally, once back at the hotel and relaxing after a long day Paddy got down on one knee. It was perfect, just the two of us. He had planned a very swanky dinner that night and after several glasses of bubbles on a rooftop bar, we ended up in a Karaoke bar singing duets (badly) together until the early hours of the morning.
The Vision
We wanted our day to be totally relaxed, like a little luxury weekend getaway in Devon for all our nearest and dearest. The vision for the look and feel of the wedding was inspired by the venue. Anran is a pretty unique venue with so many different spaces for entertaining, we wanted to take people on a journey through the day to experience each space. We kept the Glasshouse (which is a bit of a showstopper) and The Hut for dancing a surprise to our guests, to add an extra element of excitement.
Budget
Our original wedding budget was for 120 guests so when we had to reduce this to 30 people for our 2020 wedding we came in well under, even if the cost per head went up a bit!
The Ceremony & Music
We had our ceremony in the local church which was about a 10-minute walk from the venue, across the field. With it being in the middle of a pandemic everyone was wearing masks, which was a little like an episode of black mirror! The priest was great fun though and told us ‘you’ve got this’ after we’d both arrived at the top of the altar crying.
Our music was the epic Michael G Moore, he absolutely made the day. As soon as we got engaged, we contacted Michael as we knew we wanted him. Michael is really special; he plays an array of instruments and played the entire wedding day, we don’t know how he had the stamina!
He played the cello and ukulele in the church, guitar for the reception drinks and piano at the wedding breakfast until the end of the night. He really knows how to create the best atmosphere and to build the party – the dancefloor was never empty!
The Venue
As soon as we saw the venue, we knew it was where we wanted to get married, in fact, it was the first and only place we visited! We had our main reception in the ‘Glasshouse’, as the sunset throughout the dinner the hundreds of candles in the room started to reflect on the ceiling, making it such a beautiful and romantic setting. There was a courtyard, where we had our reception drinks in the sunshine and ‘The Hut’ (a converted pig barn) for the after-party that we set up with amazing disco lights so that we could dance the night away! A firepit, where people could keep warm in the evening and of course the beautiful, stylish house and barn rooms where all our guests were staying.
Your Outfits
The amazing designer Andrea Hawkes brought my dream dress to life. I spent hours trying on lots of dresses, but nothing was quite right so when I found out Andrea could do bespoke, I knew exactly what I wanted her to do. I wanted my dress to be simple and chic, but something modern and a bit different.
The silk organza wrap blouse was my favourite part of the dress, I loved the texture the fabric created, and it was the perfect sheer cover-up for the cooler weather we had. The blouse can be worn more than one way, so I hope to wear it again casually!
Paddy’s Hawes and Curtis suit was bought for his best man’s wedding in 2018. As it was the same best men, we decided to reuse the suits for our wedding day and mix it up with a different tie. It was a cost-saver and sustainable having only been worn once before!
Your Photographer & Filmmaker
We knew we wanted Albert Palmer after he photographed Becca’s bridesmaid’s wedding in 2017. Albert is so good at capturing really natural moments, beautiful venue shots and hilarious and special moments that would ordinarily get missed by most. On the day he was so good at being discrete and efficient, you barely even knew he was there and the next thing you know, you have incredible photographs!
For the videographer, we knew we wanted something pretty fun and relaxed and PuraVida Cornwall (Mike) didn’t disappoint! On the day he was super friendly and made us feel totally at ease, which is important for two people that aren’t particularly natural in front of the camera!
We also had Paddy’s best man Tom shoot a Glimpse film on his phone. Glimpse is an app that captures 2-second shots of the day, to create a video. We have a 4-minute video that makes for an amazing throwback, filled with so many memories.
The Styling & Decor
The styling of the wedding was inspired by the Glasshouse, we felt like its greenery was enough decoration so kept everything else pretty minimal and modern. Becca’s engagement ring is rose gold, and the bridesmaid dresses were a lovely dark olive-green colour and so this influenced the colour theme. We went for a simple colour pallet of greens, whites and pinks.
In the 18 months leading up to the wedding, we spent hours drying out rose petals for confetti and made our way through several charity shops collecting glass candlestick holders and vintages glass vases for the table decoration.
We were keen to be as sustainable as possible, so everything we used for decoration was either made, bought second hand or borrowed from friends and family. We even used Rosemary from the venue garden to decorate our table places.
The Honeymoon
After almost a year of lockdown and feeling in limbo about the wedding. We treated ourselves and booked a last-minute honeymoon to the Amalfi coast in Italy, whilst the COVID restrictions allowed. We spent a week relaxing in the last of the summer sunshine, enjoying limoncello spritz by the pool, site seeing in Pompeii and eating all the pasta and pizza possible! It was the perfect week to finish off the wedding celebrations.
Memorable Moments
The whole day was memorable, and we just felt incredibly lucky to be able to have our day. Given the circumstances, we had the most perfect day, filled with love laughter and remarkably blue skies! We even managed to have a pool day on the Sunday after, which was a total bonus given it was the end of September.
Advice For Other Couples
As a bride, it’s not always traditional to do a speech and I’m not a confident public speaker but that was one of the highlights of the day and would highly recommend it! With such a supportive audience it was a lovely way to express my love for Paddy.
For anyone considering a small wedding who had originally planned a larger one, we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. Whilst we would have loved for everyone to be there, the intimacy of the smaller event, made the whole thing uniquely special.
Make sure you take 5 minutes away from everyone just for the two of you, step back and soak it all in!
